REAL RECOGNIZE REAL deals with a history of painting, mythology and our time.
Art history and the many art movements and styles that have arisen through time are re-used and re-appropriated into a new context.
The whole of art history is used as a language along with references to modernity(or post-modernity) dealing with our interconnected and yet context-less daily existence. When even though each of us walks around with all the worlds knowledge in our pocket, the smartphone, news and fake-news seems to become a synonym.
The paintings critique painting and society. As societal changes become so rapid that the time for reflection may not still be there. What do you take seriously and what as a joke?
High, Just-As-High & Third
High, 90x90cm High is a marionette and sits with his arms crossed, looking at the viewer with a guilty look. On his table is a statue of 'Lady Justice', a statue which stands outside many of the world's courthouses. Lady Justice is an allegorical personification of Justice, originally from ancient Roman art. She wears a blindfold because justice should be blind. She carries scales upon which she measures the strengths of a case's support and opposition. High, however, pushes one of the scales down with his finger, maybe explaining the look on his face. High uses a ball-peen hammer to dispense his version of justice.
Just-As-High sits in the middle, seemingly deep in thought. He has only one big ear. Perhaps only hearing one side of the case. The ear is also a reference to Big Ear from 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra' ("The people told me, however, that the big ear was not only a man, but a great man, a genius. But I never believed in the people when they spake of great men - and I hold my belief that it was a reverse cripple, who had too little of everything, and too much of one thing."). Just-As-High's gavel is a plastic toy hammer that squeaks when you bang it.
& Third is all tangled up, having his right hand on the left arm and the left hand on the right. He is just about to proclaim his sentence, which he arrived at with the help of the 'Magic 8-ball' he carries in is hand.
